This chapter helps young children learn and enjoy English words that they see and use every day. In our classroom and home, we see many familiar things like chalk, dustbins, school bags, and books. By looking at these common objects, we learn that we already know many English words.
The chapter begins with a fun story about a fat cat and a clever little rat. The cat sits on a mat and wants to catch the rat. The rat quickly runs away and hides first in a hat. When the cat chases it again, the rat dashes into a box. The lid of the box remains shut, so the cat cannot catch the rat. The rat happily laughs because it is safe inside the box.
Next, there is a lively song about the world around us. It describes trees, flowers, buzzing bees, moving cars, flying kites, shoes, water bottles, and ticking clocks. Through this song, children practice naming everyday objects and colours while singing with rhythm and joy.
The lesson also includes fun learning activities. Students practice rhyming words that end in "at", such as bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, and rat. They listen to action words like catch, throw, hide, open, close, and say, and act them out in class. Children also practice observing pictures by comparing the sizes of different items and the speeds of different vehicles. Finally, the chapter encourages good habits through neat handwriting practice, writing names of family members and places, and taking proper care of books and personal belongings.
