Jahnavi was a curious young girl living with her farm-working family in a coastal village in India.
She stayed at home to look after her baby brother Appu while her elder brothers attended school.
Jahnavi desperately wanted to go to school to learn to read, write, and understand the natural world.
While crying on the riverbank, Jahnavi was startled when the friendly River spoke to comfort her.
The River assured Jahnavi that girls were just as capable and talented as boys in every way.
The River encouraged Jahnavi to be brave and visit the village school to listen to the lessons.
The River explained that ships were large vessels that sailed across the sea carrying hundreds of people.
Jahnavi gathered courage, carried baby Appu to school, and sat quietly on the earthen classroom floor.
The kind school teacher noticed Jahnavi in class and promised to talk to her father about her schooling.
The teacher visited Jahnavi's home the next evening to convince her father to permit her education.
Jahnavi's mother supported her daughter because she had been denied the chance to study in her childhood.
Jahnavi's parents agreed to send her to school to learn to write and solve sums.
An overjoyed Jahnavi visited the River to share the happy news of her admission to school.
Jahnavi decided that she would become a teacher to educate every young girl in her village.
The story conveys an inspiring message about courage, curiosity, and the essential right to girls' education.
